John Haskell Kemble maritime art collection

This collection forms part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). The collection contains 125 artworks dating from 1828 to 1981, with subjects pertaining to and/or depicting maritime vessels, including commercial and military ships. Most are oil paintings, with some watercolors also included. The collection is divided into three series: Commercial, General, and Military. Over two dozen companies are represented in the Commercial series, including Northern Pacific Steamship, Occidental and Oriental, Pacific Mail Steamship, and White Star Line. General artworks include costal and waterfront views as well as a variety of vessels. The Military series contains mainly American naval vessels, but also includes a Peruvian man-of-war schooner and a British Royal Navy frigate.

This collection forms part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). Kemble assembled his archive by saving souvenirs from his own travels as well as by purchasing items from travel agencies and other collectors. There are over 24,000 items in the collection including ship histories, brochures, schedules, passenger lists, accommodation plans, menus, and publicity pamphlets. More than 925 shipping companies are represented including American President Lines, Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd., Cunard Steamship Company, Holland Amerika Lijn, Matson Navigation Company, Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, and White Star Line.

This collection forms part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). Materials date from approximately 1850-1990 and contain correspondence, research materials, manuscripts, navy records, family papers, scrapbooks, clippings, family photographs, and a small number of vessel logbooks and bylaws. Kemble was a world traveler and recognized maritime historian, and these lifelong interests are reflected throughout the collection. Of note is a folder of self-published naval vessel histories from Pearl Harbor (World War II). The collection is unprocessed.

This collection consists of approximately 1,375 printed items that form part of the John Haskell Kemble maritime collection compiled by American maritime historian John Haskell Kemble (1912-1990). The collection dates from approximately 1720 to 1990 and contains prints, ephemera, maps, charts, calendars, objects, and photographs related to maritime and land-based travel, often from Kemble's own travels. The collection is divided into five series: prints; ephemera; maps, charts, and calendars; objects; and photographs. A large portion of this collection remains unprocessed.

The bulk of the collection consists of the diaries, account books, weather diaries, and notebooks of Milton Frank Kemble (1829-1888). Of particular interest is the diary Kemble wrote while traveling by train from Iowa to California in 1873. The rest of the collection is of materials from other members of the Kemble family.

Manuscripts
The collection consists of official copies of plays submitted for licensing between 1737 and 1824. Most of copies were written by professional copyists. Approximately 95 of the plays submitted were printed texts, either whole or partial. These have been cataloged individually and may be searched in the online catalog.
