    The Colton family correspondence covers family news, social life in Milan and Columbus, Ohio, including news on exhibits, musical performances, and charity works. Correspondents include Hamilton Colton, Carlos Colton, Sheldon Colton, and Mary Whiting Colton. The Civil War correspondence of Carlos, Hamilton, and Sheldon Colton, George B. Whiting, and Mary Whiting Colton depict the life of a Union soldier as well as life in Ohio in wartime, including discussions of war and politics. There is also some poetry, one photograph, and some ephemera. The correspondence of George B. Whiting deals with his mission work in Beirut.

    Lionel Allen Sheldon Collection

    This collection primarily contains memoirs written by United States Congressman and Civil War officer Lionel Allen Sheldon (1828-1917) about men he knew, specifically generals and politicians during the Civil War period. Some of these memoirs are part of his larger work Reminiscence of Men and Events, which appear to be unpublished. There are a few pieces of correspondence and ephemera following the manuscripts. Note: Autograph corrections appear throughout the collection, possibly done by Lionel A. Sheldon.

    The collection contains letters, narratives, and eight large volumes of clippings related to the members of the Jayhawkers, their overland trip to the California gold fields through Death Valley, and their annual reunions held between 1872 to 1918. It also contains diaries by Asa Haines and Sheldon Young of the Jayhawkers' route and a map of Death Valley by William Lewis Manly, approximately 1889. The collection was assembled by John B. Colton (1831-1919), a member of the Jayhawker party. Participants in the collection include: John Wells Brier, Reverend James Brier, William Frederick Dody, Jessie Benton Fremont, John Groscup, Eliza Poor Donner Houghton, Charles Fletcher Lummis, William Lewis Manley, Charles B. Mecum, and Lorenzo Dow Stephens. The collection also includes items related to Mary Hunter Austin, Frederic Remington, and Theodore Roosevelt.

    Lionel Allen Sheldon letter to "Dear Nelson,"

    Manuscripts

    In this 2-page handwritten letter, L. A. Sheldon is asking his friend "Nelson" to help solve a problem with a missing benefit certificate and non-payment of a claim. In the letter he states that the First National Bank of Pasadena will pay on the condition that the certificate is surrendered to them. The letter is written on letterhead of "Offices of Redondo Beach Co." which has a small map of southern California showing Redondo Beach, Los Angeles and other cities. The letter includes a list of the directors of the company including Charles Silent, one of the founders of the city of Redondo Beach.
